Me and My Reading Habits

This meme is for BBAW and this will also be a dual purpose post.

First, I wanted to explain why I changed my blog name (and my handle on Twitter-now is @truebookaddict).  My url is http://thetruebookaddict.blogspot.com/  This had many people thinking that the title of my blog is (was) The True Book Addict...also, there is another book blog out there titled Book Addict.  So I have officially changed my title to "The True Book Addict" and, as I explain in my About Me section, this does not mean that I am the only "True" book addict around, but that I'm "True" to books! I hope the change does not confuse anyone.

Now, on to the meme fun!

Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of

writing in books horrify you?

I will not write in books.  I don't even write in my textbooks! If I feel I need to make notes, I use paper or notecards.

How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?

A bookmark is an absolute necessity! I collect them actually (and I just won four more in Bibliofreak's prize pack of the day!).

Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?

I actually like both, but I probably read more fiction.

Hard copy or audiobooks?

I do both...I listen to audiobooks in my car.  Usually I listen to the audiobook if I've already read the book.

Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you

able to put a book down at any point?

I like to read to the end of the chapter, but if I'm in a time crunch, I stop wherever I am in the book.

If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away?

Not usually.  I might write it down and look it up later.
What are you currently reading?

Frankenstein, 206 Bones by Kathy Reichs, Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, listening to Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice on audio.

What is the last book you bought?

I bought a TON at my monthly used book sale on Saturday (see previous blog post, In My Mailbox).  The last new book I bought was Family Business by Brett Williams.

Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can

you read more than one at a time?

I'm usually reading at least two at a time.

Do you have a favorite time of day and/or place to read?

I mostly read at night since I'm a night owl, usually sitting on the couch.  I also like to read in the car while waiting to pick up my sons at school.  I never leave the house without a book!

Do you prefer series books or stand alone books?

I'm going to say stand alone only because I never read a series one right after the other...I take breaks between.  There are some series I really like though.

Is there a specific book or author that you find yourself recommending over and over?

Anne Rice books, especially Queen of the Damned, The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, Stephen King, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
How do you organize your books? (By genre, title, author’s last name, etc.?)

I have 1400+ fiction that I organize by author.  My non-fiction is organized by subject and my Christmas books (of which I have many) are in a class by themselves!

Thanks to BBAW for this wonderful meme and for a great week of book blogging!

Congratulations to all the winners!

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. It means so much.

I apologize for word verification, but as soon as I changed the settings from only users with Google accounts, I started receiving a ton of spam comments...within one hour of changing the settings. The bots are on high alert apparently.

  1. Wow that's a lot of books. I get the majority of my books from the library so I don't have a lot of books really and they're mainly series. I treat my books well but I'll admit that I might abuse the library books just a wee bit. It's no big deal if I drop one of them on the sidewalk and into that icky white stuff that just won't go away.

  2. I try to be careful with library books too because I've had times where there was some substance on a library book I was reading and I'm like, "Ewwww, what is that?!" Mystery goo!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  5. WOW! Holy Books! That is a lot of books. I could only dream of having that many. I would love to have that many. Maybe someday I will get there. I have to get the extra bed room to have the room for them first though...

    Great answers!

  6. I have had a booger incident with a library book which wasn't fun so I tend to not read them in bed anymore after that.

  7. I enjoyed reading your replies. With the number of books you have, it sounds like your house could easily be mistaken for a library!

  8. Yes, it very well could...and I have strict fines for those who don't return what they borrow!

  9. I tried to answer all these (and some more) question by using not more than 5 words or a picture: Bona Fide: Reading Meme. And recently I posted about my reading habits.

I missed following question and would like to see your answer: Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?

My wife and I own 400+ books. Due to space problems we store them in a very small cellar. In order to keep them clean, dry and without cellar smell we put the books in freezer bags.

  10. ediFanoB-I guess I left that one off because I generally do not snack when I'm reading. The only time I eat when I'm reading is if I am eating at a restaurant or Starbucks (and the like) by myself...which is rarely.

I have an older house that has what you would call a "formal" living room or dining room and a separate den. Well, I made that living room in to my library/dining room. I have bookshelves on every wall except for where my piano is and below the windows...even my entry way, which enters in to this room, holds two bookshelves. I have a large round table in the center of the room. It's my favorite room in the house! I'm in the process of working on it right now, but when I'm finished I will be posting pics here for all to see! =o)

    Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Thank you for your answer. Please apologize delay in my answer. I'm a bit behind with checking blog comments. We would like to have a separate room for books only. It is a dream.
