It's All About The Books!

I saw this meme over at Book Chick City and I love Q and As about books so....

Hardback, trade paperback or mass market paperback?

I probably have an equal amount of hardbacks and paperbacks.  I get most of my hardbacks at used book sales so I usually don't pay more than $2.00 for them.  That's why I have so many! I do not have much love for mass market paperbacks...I have very few of those.

Barnes & Noble, Borders or Amazon?

As I said above, I buy most of my books at used book sales, etc.  However, I order books from Amazon occasionally.  I also like BetterWorldBooks.com because they have free shipping (pay a few cents extra for carbon free shipping) and the purchase price is donated to literacy programs.  I love going to Barnes & Noble and browsing...usually in the bargain section.  I love the atmosphere!

Bookmark or dog-ear?

Always, always bookmarks! I have a great collection of bookmarks...I love them! I dog-earred when I was younger (teen years)...ugh! I would NEVER think of doing that now.

Amazon or brick-and-mortar?

Brick and mortar! I enjoy browsing for books in person so much more than shopping online.  Although online book shopping has it's appeal as well.

Alphabetize by author, or alphabetize by title, or random?

All of my fiction books are alphabetized by author.  My non-fiction books are done by category...history, biography, art, self-help, etc.  My Christmas books, which I have a lot of, are in their own category including the Christmas novels.

Keep, throw away, or sell?

I would NEVER throw a book away...that would be blasphemy! I keep 99% of my books.  I only get rid of a book I know I will not read again.  Then I either give it to my sister or another family member or friend or I donate it to Friends of the Library or Goodwill.

Keep dust jacket or toss it?

I keep the dust jackets although some of the time I take them off when I'm reading the book.  The only reason I would toss one would be if I bought a book and the jacket was extremely damaged.

Read with dust jacket or remove it?

Sometimes on, sometimes off!

.
Short story or novel?

I prefer novels much more than short stories.  The only short stories I even buy are Stephen King.  Although I did enjoy Clive Barker's Books of Blood I & II.  If I'm going to read short stories, they have to be horror or supernatural.  Oh, and I also like Christmas short stories!

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?

Harry Potter, of course! I still have not read the last book though!

Buy or borrow?

I mostly buy.  I love the library though.  I check out books occasionally...mostly non-fiction and I get my audiobooks from the library.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendations, or browse?

Mostly browse.  I read the reviews, but that's not usually the ultimate decision maker for me.  If a book interests me, I do not let a negative review dissuade me from reading it.  I also go by recommendations sometimes as well.

Tidy ending or cliffhanger?

I'm not much for cliffhangers because I usually don't read series fiction right in a row.  I guess a tidy ending or at least a semi-tidy ending!

Morning reading, afternoon reading, or nighttime reading?

Mostly afternoon or night.  If I'm at work and not busy, it's usually morning or afternoon.

Stand-alone or series?

For this, I have mixed feelings.  I take breaks between series fiction because I get bored with it so I guess I probably prefer stand-alone.  Don't get me wrong though...I do like a good series!

Favourite series?

Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and her Mayfair Witches Trilogy.  I also liked Terry Brooks Magic Kingdom of Landover series although I still have not finished the last books in the series (I told you) =)
I really like the Harry Potter books as well.

Favorite children’s book?

The Velveteen Rabbit, The Little House...there are actually so many! I loved the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Wizard of Oz series by L. Frank Baum.

Favourite YA book?

I haven't read very much YA as an adult.  Yes, I really liked Twilight and I'm looking forward to reading New Moon before the movie comes out in November...don't judge! LOL  I recently won an Early Review copy of a YA book from Library Thing (see my earlier post) so I'm looking forward to reading that.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Blackwater by Kerstin Ekman.  I'm sure someone has heard of it though.  I hope so! Ekman is a Swedish author.  This was a great book!

Favourite books read last year?

The Devil Wears Prada, Duma Key by Stephen King, Twilight, The Keep by Jennifer Egan

Favourite books of all time?

There are really too many to name all of them so I'll name a few...Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice, The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, The Lord of the Rings, Little Women, A Christmas Carol by Dickens.

Favorite book to recommend to an 11-year-old?

Little Women, the Little House series, Charlotte's Web, The Chronicles of Narnia...to name a few.

Favorite book to re-read?

I have read Queen of the Damned three times and I'm getting ready to read it again via audiobook in a month or two! Also, Little Women and A Christmas Carol.

Do you ever smell books?

Occasionally...I actually really smell them when I buy them at Goodwill because sometimes they actually stink!

Do you ever read primary source documents like letters or diaries?

Yes, frequently because I'm a history/English major and we have to read them.  As a matter of fact, we're reading Bede right now in my History of England class!

What are you reading right now?

Any Given Doomsday by Lori Handeland (almost finished), Frankenstein
Audiobook:  Interview with the Vampire.

What are you reading next?

206 Bones by Kathy Reichs, Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Audiobook:  The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice

That's it! So now you know a bit more about me, why not do the meme yourself so I can learn more about you. Make sure you come back and leave a comment with a link to your post!

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. It means so much.

I apologize for word verification, but as soon as I changed the settings from only users with Google accounts, I started receiving a ton of spam comments...within one hour of changing the settings. The bots are on high alert apparently.

  1. Oh what great questions. I'm going to have to steal this from you later this week.
