First, I just wanted to thank you for the sweet comments and emails I received from you all with words of encouragement. I appreciate it more than you will ever know.I've decided to do one month to six weeks updates (in my A Reading Life posts) on my "rediscovering healthy/transforming me" journey. I am so thankful for your support!

They're not always enemies. In fact, in my experience, they get along quite well. Case in point...

#CatThursday - Another #reading #cats edition (and an update from the kitties' mom)

Welcome to the weekly meme that celebrates the wonders and hilarity of cats! Join us by posting a favorite lolcat pic you may have come across, famous cat art or even share with us pics of your own beloved cat(s). It's all for the love of cats! (share your post in the Mr. Linky below)

So, an update of sorts. I know I'm really behind on my visits and I apologize. A lot going on around here. I've had a slew of doctor's appointments. Found out I have hypothyroidism. Went for a gastric bypass consult. Had pretty much decided I was going to do the surgery (after a six month weight loss/physical fitness regimen managed by my primary care doctor). I even went for the psychological evaluation/testing which is one of the first steps. However, I've changed my mind. I'm going to do this...on my own...and I know I can. One of the gastric bypass requirements was to be treated for sleep apnea. I was previously under treatment, but was non-compliant, but I'm determined to go back and really stick with it this time. It should help tremendously with my weight loss/fitness journey, in combination with the treatment for hypothyroidism (I've been on the medicine for a month and I've already lost 5 lbs!). I've already been modifying my diet, cutting back, making better choices, cutting sweets. Today, I start my exercise journey. I'm starting on my recumbent bike and gradually transitioning over to elliptical and walking, etc. My long-term goal? To run in my first marathon! I know that's a-ways down the road, but it is something I've always wanted to do. Again though, it's long-term. My family is behind me. With their support, also from friends, and some strong determination on my part, I'm ready. Let's do this!

Work has really been kicking my butt. I took on another (at-home) job in addition to my virtual assistant work, and I recently acquired another client. Just finished a big project for that client. I've been busy for two days straight. I'm behind on my reading and although I'm hosting the High Summer Readathon over the next two weeks (it started Monday...you can still join us), I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to focus on reading, as I'm working on my novel as well. (Not to mention the whole Photobucket fiasco. I still haven't had time to finish fixing everything!) Whew. 😰

I will try to catch up on visits to your posts. Please don't give up on me...and thanks for being here, and for bearing with me. 💕

In honor of the readathon going on, I'm sharing more reading cats. 😸

#CatThursday - #Authors and #Cats (64)

Welcome to the weekly meme that celebrates the wonders and sometime hilarity of cats! Join us by posting a favorite lolcat pic you may have come across, famous cat art or even share with us pics of your own beloved cat(s). It's all for the love of cats! (share your post in the Mr. Linky below)

The second Cat Thursday of each month is Authors and Cats Thursday. Each time I will feature an author with their cat(s), or pictured with a cat(s).

You may have seen my post about the technical difficulties on the blog because of the evil Photobucket, but if you have not seen it, please excuse any image issues on the blog. It's going to take me a while to fix everything, as I have 7+ blogs to work on. Oh me. 🙀

How can we have an authors and cats post in July without honoring Ernest Hemingway, celebrated author and renowned cat lover, in the month of his birth (July 21, 1899 - July 2, 1961)? We can't...that's how!

The following is about the book, Hemingway's Cats by Carlene Fredericka Brennen:

In 1943 Ernest Hemingway, living in Cuba with his third wife and eleven cats, wrote to his first wife:

"One cat just leads to another. . . . The place is so damned big it doesn't really seem as though there were many cats until you see them all moving like a mass migration at feeding time. . . ."

He always took great pleasure in writing to his family about his cats and how they were getting along. Family and pets played an important role in Hemingway's life, revealing a softer side to his character than is usually portrayed by the macho image of the hunter and fisherman. His pets were mostly cats - the number at Finca Vigia, his Cuban home, at one time swelling to fifty-seven. He called the cats "purr factories" and "love sponges" who soaked up love in return for comfort and companionship.

It is impossible to write about Hemingway's cats without also telling the story of his family life, particularly the women he loved. From the many cats he grew up with at his childhood homes in Oak Park, Illinois and Walloon Lake, Michigan, to his last cat, Big Boy Peterson, in Ketchum, Idaho, Hemingway sought the companionship of cats. Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, had Feather Kcat in Toronto and the gentle F. Puss in Paris, who, according to Hemingway in A Moveable Feast, served as babysitter for his first son. Hemingway settled into his home in Key West with Pauline, his second wife, and a good many six-toed cats from next-door - the descendants of whom still roam the house and grounds on Whitehead Street. Of Hemingway's four wives, only Pauline, who was not a cat fancier, did not acquire one of his fond nicknames: Kat, Kath, Cat, Feather Kitty, Katherine Cat, Kitten, or Kittner.

It was his third wife, Martha, who convinced Hemingway to buy Finca Vigia, the Cuban farm with many buildings - and many stray cats. There Hemingway brought in the elegant Persian Princessa, the adopted strays Willie and Dillinger (aka Boise and Brother), and the Angora Good Will. From the mating of Princessa and Boise, many litters ensued.

Dogs also found their way into Hemingway's homes, beginning with Wax Puppy, whom he got for Hadley when they were first in Paris. In Cuba he adopted several small mixed-breed dogs with curled tails. One in particular, Negrita, stole his heart. Mary, his fourth wife, loved the animals at the Finca, and it was on a trip to Idaho with Mary that they acquired Black Dog, a springer spaniel who went back to Cuba with them to join the sea of cats and dogs.

All his life Ernest Hemingway surrounded himself with cats and dogs and sought their comfort during times of loneliness and stress. They appear in many of his writings, particularly in A Moveable Feast, Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, and True at First Light - all written late in his life and as close to autobiography as he came.

Bear with me... #Photobucket killed my sites!

This post will be cross-posted on all of my sites.

You may not have heard about Photobucket screwing over a ton of people with their new third party image hosting plan. (Read more here: http://nypost.com/2017/07/05/how-photobucket-is-now-shaking-down-its-users/) Basically, it means if you have a free account, you can no longer host your images without paying $400/year! So, all those clever grab codes I make for images and buttons...they have to be fixed with a new link from wherever the images are now being hosted. Luckily, I own two domains on GoDaddy so I get free image storage up to a certain amount and then I can pay extra if I need more (only $1.99/month). But with 7+ blogs/sites, it's going to take me a bit. I hope you will bear with me.

If you have any of my buttons on your site, I'm afraid you will have to delete and then come back by at a later date to grab the new code. There should not be any further problems in future. Fingers crossed.

I hope Photobucket crashes and burns for their underhanded tactics. I mean, I didn't even get an email notifying me!

Donna Russo Morin's The Competition - #Review & #Giveaway #TheCompetitionBlogTour

My thoughts
This book comes at a time, even more so than the first book Portrait of a Conspiracy, when the triumph of the female spirit needs to be heard. Women have made so much progress in the world (in my country, the U.S.), but in recently, we have begun to feel subjugated once more. The very real progress women have made seems to be reverting back, or stagnating. It is stories such as this that can work to inspire women that the fight for equality is well worth it.

I always enjoy Russo Morin's books. She really knows how to tell a story while bringing vividly to life the real historical figures and events surrounding her characters. These women, these Da Vinci's Disciples, are the lifeblood of the story. Each woman is unique and even when brought together as a whole with the group, their individuality shines. I like to think that there really were women such as this. In fact, I'm quite sure there probably were. Perhaps they did not take on a large commission as depicted in the book, nor bid for commissions during that time period, but I like to think there was a hidden studio with women secretly working, defying society's strictures on women and what they were allowed to do.

Having Leonardo Da Vinci as an important supporting character works very well with these stories. Of what I've read on Da Vinci, I believe that he had very progressive attitudes. For him to be mentoring a group of women artists does not seem impossible to me. I love that the author used real quotes from him throughout the book. This one is my favorite and really captures the spirit of the book:

"I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death."

However, a quote from Viviana, the central and most endearing character, in my opinion, is what spoke to me the most. It is a personal motto of mine. "We all deserve to be loved, but our first love should always be for ourselves. Without self-love and self-respect, we show others how they may treat us."

And that is the crux of this story. These women believed in themselves, believed in their talent, enough to defy society's views of what women can and cannot do. It's an inspiring work of historical fiction that should not be missed.

The Competition by Donna Russo Morin

Publication Date: April 25, 2017
Diversion Publishing
eBook & Paperback; 268 Pages

Series: Da Vinci's Disciples, Book Two
Genre: Historical/Mystery

Donna Russo Morin returns with a follow-up to Portrait of a Conspiracy, called “a page-turner unlike any historical novel, weaving passion, adventure, artistic rebirth, and consequences of ambition,” by C.W. Gortner.

In a studiolo behind a church, six women gather to perform an act that is, at once, restorative, powerful, and illegal. They paint. Under the tutelage of Leonardo da Vinci, these six show talent and drive equal to that of any man, but in Renaissance Florence they must hide their skills, or risk the scorn of the city.

A commission to paint a fresco in Santo Spirito is announced and Florence’s countless artists each seek the fame and glory this lucrative job will provide. Viviana, a noblewoman freed from a terrible marriage and now free to pursue her artistic passions in secret, sees a potential life-altering opportunity for herself and her fellow female artists. The women first speak to Lorenzo de’ Medici himself, and finally, they submit a bid for the right to paint it. And they win.

But the church will not stand for women painting, especially not in a house of worship. The city is not ready to consider women in positions of power, and in Florence, artists wield tremendous power. Even the women themselves are hesitant; the attention they will bring upon themselves will disrupt their families, and could put them in physical danger.

All the while, Viviana grows closer to Sansone, her soldier lover, who is bringing her joy that she never knew with her deceased husband. And fellow-artist Isabetta has her own romantic life to distract her, sparked by Lorenzo himself. Power and passion collide in this sumptuous historical novel of shattering limitations, one brushstroke at a time.

“In Portrait of a Conspiracy, Russo Morin's rich detailing transports the reader to the heart of Renaissance Italy from the first page.”―Heather Webb, author of Becoming Josephine

"In elegant prose, Morin paints a captivating tale of courageous women painters who battle against prejudices in Renaissance Florence. Featuring strong women characters, each with distinctive personalities, this is exactly the type of historical novel I enjoy. Exhilarating and compassionate, The Competition sings a beautiful tribute of women's talents and underscores Morin's masterful storytelling. Delightful!"―Weina Dai Randel, author of The Moon in the Palace and The Empress of Bright Moon
