Cat Thursday: Authors and their Cats (10)

Welcome to the weekly meme that celebrates the wonders and sometime hilarity of cats! Join us by posting a favorite LOL cat pic you may have come across, famous cat art or even share with us pics of your own beloved cat(s). It's all for the love of cats! Enjoy! (share your post in the Mr. Linky below)

The second Cat Thursday of each month is Authors and their Cats Thursday.  Each time I will feature an author and their cat(s).

First of all, I'd like to apologize to my loyal Cat Thursday-ists for not stopping by your posts last week.  I was out of town and I came home Friday sick...and I'm STILL sick.  Ugh! I hope you will forgive me.  I will make a concerted effort to visit your stops this week.  I promise!

I found this poem and image on icanhascheezburger.com.  Lovely!

Well, I wasn't really on an exotic vacation, but visiting family and friends is still a nice vacay! Ceiling cat, on the other hand, picked up a nice tan. ;O)

The Happiness Blog Tour and {Give@way}

Bryan Cohen here, guest poster and author, promoting my new book The Post-College Guide to Happiness for The Happiness Blog Tour. I'm giving away free digital review copies of the book and doing a giveaway for paperback copies, audio copies and even a Kindle Fire! Read on and check out the info below the post.

"How we feel about ourselves, the joy we get from living, ultimately depends directly on how the mind filters and interprets everyday experiences. Whether we are happy depends on inner harmony, not on the controls we are able to exert over the great forces of the universe." - Mihaly Csikszentmihaly

About four years ago, on a $20,000 per year salary, I spent approximately $30,000 on a risky, creative project in a hope to make my dreams of being a television writer and producer come true. I did this despite the fact that I'd made a verbal commitment to my father that I would some day pay back one half of the $100,000 that was spent on my college education. You might say I was financially reckless. You might just say that I was a bit naive and stupid. Regardless, the project was not successful and I was sent into a spiral of debt and despair.

I had a huge amount of debt with little qualification to pay if off; after all, I only had an English and Dramatic Art degree, not exactly six-figure salary material. For a little while I felt like I was completely sunk. It felt awful to think of myself as a failure so I began to look for a different point-of-view. I read some of the greatest business success stories of all time. It turned out that plenty of people had failed like me and even more gloriously than I had. How did they turn their fortunes about? While there was a lot of luck and hard work involved, there was something that truly stuck out for me. They didn't blame their circumstances for a tough life. They didn't assume that their lives were over due to their bad decisions or unfortunate situations.

They made their failures into learning experiences. Instead of feeling they had screwed up, they decided to instead paint the circumstances as an opportunity.

If these people could come back from greater odds than me with this attitude, I felt almost obliged to adopt it. Not surprisingly, it began to affect the other parts of my life as well. When little things happened to me such as missing the right bus or spilling something in the kitchen, it didn't feel nearly as bad. I just had to learn my lesson of leaving for work earlier or to pay more attention when cooking. These were lessons that weren't meant to ruin my day. They weren't a sign that a higher power had it in for me.

All of the hardships in my life were meant to teach me something. It was up to me to learn those lessons. If you can take on a similar attitude, you will not only be more successful but you will also be much happier in the long run.

Bryan Cohen is giving away 61 paperback and audio copies of The Post-College Guide to Happiness and a Kindle Fire between now and May 7th, 2012 on The Happiness Blog Tour. All entrants receive a free digital review copy of The Post-College Guide to Happiness. Bryan hopes to give away at least 1,000 copies during the blog tour. To enter, post a comment with your e-mail address or send an e-mail to postcollegehappiness (at) gmail.com. Bryan will draw the names at the end of the tour. Entries will be counted through Sunday, May 6th.

Review Copy Cleanup Wrap-Up and Final Challenge

Well, I only managed to complete three of my review books for March so I hardly made a dent in my to-be-reviewed pile.  Here's what I read and reviewed:

At the Mercy of the Queen by Anne Clinard Barnhill (review)
The Turning of Anne Merrick by Christine Blevins (review)
The Sister Queens by Sophie Perinot (review)

I was so busy in March that I didn't get to participate in any of the challenges, except for the first one.  Every time I would think of doing one, the time would be up.  That's me...a day late and a dollar short! Anyway, the final challenge is the Love Will Find a Way Challenge.  In this challenge, we are to share our all-time favorite book.  The book (or books) we would have to have with us on a deserted island (they're not limiting us to pick only one...good thing!).  Here are my top ten favorites (in no particular order except for the first one):

Notice: Book Nooks

I apologize for not posting for Book Nooks this weekend.  I'm going out of town tomorrow...oooh, it's after midnight...today and it has been a hectic weekend of packing, etc., plus Bloggiesta.  What was I thinking?  I hope all you lovely Book Nook regulars will forgive me.

Bloggiesta!

Finish line! As you can see from the list below, I didn't accomplish all I set out to.  I'm in Michigan right now.  I spent most of the day Saturday packing for the trip and yesterday travelling so I didn't get as much accomplished as I wanted.  The one thing I wish I could have gotten to was backing up my blogs.  I'm still going to be doing that really soon.  My thanks to The Book Vixen for her informative post on backing up blogs!

I hope everyone had a fun Bloggiesta!

You can see what I did get done by the cross offs on the list below.

First off, let me just mention that I'm not promising any major accomplishments for Bloggiesta.  I still have a lot of reading to do and I'm getting ready to go out of town on Sunday so I may not complete everything on my list, but we shall see....

I had originally planned to work on my home library blog, A Huge Library in a Small Apartment, but I just do not have the time to devote to such a large undertaking so that project will have to be tackled at a later date.  Here are the tasks I would like to accomplish:

  • Add Dewey's Read-a-Thon buttons to sidebar of this blog and Castle Macabre
  • Edit and add to slide show header at Castle Macabre
  • Add my Amazon bazaar to Castle Macabre
  • Linked all book review label to a page--still not an ideal alphabetical list of reviews but at least the page pulls up all posts tagged 'book review' (this was an unplanned task)  =O)  Also, on Castle Macabre
  • Directed authors to revised review policy using a smaller section of the blog on here and at Castle Macabre (another unplanned task!)
  • Complete my lists for A Non-Fiction Adventure and Once Upon a Time VI challenges and get them posted here, at A Non-Fiction Adventure and Challenges of The True Book Addict (my challenge blog) Partially finished, still have to complete list at Non-Fiction Adventure and post it to the challenge blog and both challenges to main blog. Whew!
  • Update reading challenges at my challenge blog (see above)
  • Write review(s) for, at least, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
  • Post a few reviews to Goodreads and Amazon and to my history blog, A Brave Heart
  • Update calendar here on the blog
  • Update 2012 Reads list and Review books list
  • Back up all of my blogs (I have a bunch of blogs so I may only get to this one and Castle Macabre, but I will at least try to back them up and get to the others later)

So there you have it! We will see how this goes.  I've made this a sticky post and I will update by crossing off items on the list.  Wish me luck!

Feliz Bloggiesta! Ole'!
