Austen in August Giveaway! #AustenInAugustRBR

WINNER - LORY @ EMERALD CITY BOOK REVIEW - WINNER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED - CONGRATS!

Hello there, Austenites! I hope you're enjoying Austen in August. Many thanks to Adam for hosting such a marvelous event.

I'm going to go straightaway to the giveaway details, as that's what you're here for. :)

Better World Books is a bookseller that you may or may not have heard of. Here's a bit about them from their website:

It's simple: Every time you purchase a book from BetterWorldBooks.com, we donate a book to someone in need. The books we donate go through hundreds of non-profit organizations - you can see them on our Impact Map. In particular, Books for Africa and Feed the Children partner with us to take large numbers of donated books and get them to people who need them.

Books donated as of July 2015: over 17 Million

I order from them all the time. Not only do they have great bargains, but purchasing from them puts books into the hands of people who might not otherwise have them. Plus, they offer free shipping worldwide! It certainly seems like an all win situation to me.

Their bargain bin is my go-to shopping place. Three bargain books are always $10 (unless they're having an even better sale, in which case they're even cheaper)! So, that's the giveaway. The chosen winner will visit this page of Jane Austen titles, retellings and continuations and choose three (3) books for their reading pleasure.

Two things to keep in mind when you visit that link:
  1. There is more than one page so be sure to look through all the pages. Just be sure the search remains populated with 'Jane Austen.'
  2. To be eligible for the sale, the book must be sold by Better World Books (not 'Other Sellers'). To verify, click on the book cover and if you see a little 'sale' tag under the price, you're golden.
Rules:
1. You must be an Austen in August participant.
2. You do not have to be a follower of my blog to enter.
3. Open internationally.
4. Winner will be selected using random.org.

To enter:
  • Leave a comment telling me your top three favorite Jane Austen characters and a brief description of why for each.
  • Include your email address so I can contact you if you win.
This giveaway will end on Monday, August 31 at 11:59pm CST. I will choose a winner on Sept. 1. Winner will have 48 hours to respond to my email. If I receive no response, I will choose a new winner.

That's it! Good luck to you all!

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. It means so much.

I apologize for word verification, but as soon as I changed the settings from only users with Google accounts, I started receiving a ton of spam comments...within one hour of changing the settings. The bots are on high alert apparently.

  1. I have never heard of this book seller but will certainly check it out!
As for my 3 favorite characters....they do change based on what I am reading or what is going on in life. For example, if I need a laugh Mr Collins, Mr Elliot, and Mrs Bennet are always on the list. All time favorites however have to include Elizabeth Bennet because of her spunkiness, Anne Elliot because she has this calm sense of acceptness of all those people who demand too much of her and yet there are lines she won't cross, and finally Capt Wentworth because he will finally give Anne her own life which includes the support to tell Mary, Elizabeth, the Mr Elliots, et al that her life counts too.

  2. I've ordered from Better World Books! My book club has them as a go-to resource.

My three favorite Austen characters are:

1.) Catherine Morland. She's unworldly and naive. I can relate to her. I totally felt all her angst. And she loves books.
2.) Henry Tilney. He is a realistic romantic. He overlooks her flaws and mistakes and I just can't get over him secretly preparing that cottage!
3.) Elizabeth Bennett. I am more like Catherine but I want to be more like Lizzy. Apart from the prejudice.:)

  3. I've never ordered from Better World Books, but I will in the future. Thanks for bringing this seller to my attention.
My favorite characters vary, too, based on which novel I am reading. My favorite will always be Anne Elliot because she is always kind. As I am currently re-reading Sense & Sensibility, I will pick Elinor and Colonel Brandon as my other two favorites. They both look out for others, even at their own expense.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  4. Great idea! My three characters are: Elizabeth Bennet - I love how she keeps her spirit and sense of humor in really rather a difficult situation. Henry Tilney - he's funny, charming and not a snob. Captain Wentworth - a really strong man is able to admit when he's made a mistake.

  5. In college I worked at the library and we used BWB when we got rid of books so I'm fairly familiar with it. I've never gotten books from there though... what a great idea!
My favorite Austen characters??? Hard but doable!
Mr. Knightley- Because he is a true gentleman. He is always willing to give advice even if it is advice you don't want to hear. He's kind and self-sacrificing. He also has a sense of humor. Basically the perfect guy! ;)
Henry Tilney- Tilney is like a lighter version of Mr. Knightley for me. He gives great advice as well, even when it's hard advice. He's kind and endearing. He's a lot funnier though and the kind of guy you'd just want to be best friends with.
The Bennet family- Because I can't just chose one of their family members! I love Elizabeth because she is witty, kind and in the end willing to admit her faults. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet crack me up for different reasons such as their hilarious dialogue but also annoy me for various reasons (aka horrible parents!). Jane is sweet and never willing to see faults (which can be a fault in it of itself). Mary is Mary. Kitty and Lydia can make me laugh but in the end disgust me. Kitty though I see hope for and I always dreamed she would make progress and leave behind the influence of Lydia.

  6. Hmm, I tried to post this earlier but it seems not to have worked. Apologies if you get like half a dozen duplicates. *why internet, why?*

    Ahem.

I've never heard of this bookseller. I've been looking for an alternative to Amazon- I'll have to give them a try!

My favorites I think have to be:

Mr. Darcy- not for the shallow reasons (okay, those to), but because at base I think he's actually really shy and people mistake it for dickishness, which I really relate to on a lot of levels.

Elinor Dashwood- because she has to be strong and hold everyone together but she's able to find true love in the end.

Catherine Morland- because she's a little bit silly but good-hearted. Also because, tbh, I just rewatched the movie and she's fresh in my mind :)

  7. My three are:

Mr Darcy - because it's Mr Darcy and I have such a crush.

Eleanor because I love her steadfastness.

Col. Brandon because when I read I see and hear Alan RIckman.

  8. I was trying to find out how to be an Austen in August participant but it said you had to sign up by August 5? Kind of dumb if it excludes you from contests later on. I just like to enter contests. I've bought from Better World Books on Amazon. Sometimes there are books for a penny.

  9. Sorry to comment twice but my time ran out on the library computer. I'm not really good at describing why I like a character (and I'm tired), but here goes:

1 - Mr. Darcy. Everyone loves him. He's an interesting character.
2 - Elizabeth Bennet. She knows what she wants and that she doesn't just want to marry a rich man for his money or estate.
3 - Georgiana Darcy. Although a minor character, she shows up in many Austenesque sequels. She's shy but I think she's nice and I like to learn about her in these sequels.

Most of the Austen sequels I have feature P & P characters.

I also like Captain Wentworth. Wouldn't it be nice to see him in his naval uniform? I do like Mr. Knightley, too.
