Book Tour: Review of The Hypnotist by M. J. Rose

My thoughts:
I have mentioned previously that I am a believer of reincarnation so I have been very interested in reading Ms. Rose's Reincarnationist series.  When I was offered a place on the book tour for The Hypnotist, I jumped at the chance, even though I had not yet read the first and second books in the series.  I am pleased to say that Rose's book has everything.  International intrigue, art history, museums, and, of course, the 'science' of reincarnation.  The Hypnotist can be read as a stand alone book which I was very pleased to note.  There were no feelings of missing something while reading the book.  Despite everything that abounds in the book, what I found the most interesting were the parts dealing with reincarnation.  Being a believer in the theory, I relished the parts of the book where a hypnotist took a person to their past lives under hypnosis.  What I believe is an important aspect of historical fiction, which this book really is not technically, is the book's ability to motivate the reader into further investigation of the subject matter.  I believe this is also important in other works of fiction and that is what The Hypnotist has done for me.  While I know a bit about the subject of reincarnation, this book has made me want to investigate the subject more thoroughly, and, perhaps...don't be shocked...has provoked me to consider the idea of visiting a past life regression hypnotist myself.  I would like to know what Ms. Rose's opinion of the subject is...does she truly believe in the possibility?  (A personal encounter regarding reincarnation led Rose to write this series.  You can read more about that experience in her guest post HERE).

I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read mysteries set in the world of art and museums with a good bit of international intrigue in the mix.  And for anyone with an interest in reincarnation, whether you believe or not.  And, of course, the past life regressions will appeal to anyone who loves historical fiction.  I can't wait to go back and read the first two books in the series.

About the book:

Haunted by his inability to stop the murder of a beautiful young painter twenty years ago, Lucian Glass keeps his demons at bay through his fascinating work with the FBI's Art Crime Team. Investigating a crazed collector who's begun destroying prized masterworks, Glass is thrust into a bizarre hostage negotiation that takes him undercover at the Phoenix Foundation—dedicated to the science of past-life study. There, to maintain his cover, he submits to the treatment of a hypnotist.

Under hypnosis, Glass travels from ancient Greece to nineteenth-century Persia, while the case takes him from New York to Paris and the movie while the case takes him from New York to Paris and the movie capital of the world. These journeys will change his very understanding of reality, lead him to question his own sanity and land him at the center of perhaps the most audacious art heist in history: a fifteen-hundred-year-old sculpture the nation of Iran will do anything to recover.

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. It means so much.

I apologize for word verification, but as soon as I changed the settings from only users with Google accounts, I started receiving a ton of spam comments...within one hour of changing the settings. The bots are on high alert apparently.

  1. I also liked The Hypnotist (my thoughts http://manoflabook.com/wp/?p=2154). I liked the mix of history, mysticism and art and found the story fluid and interesting.

  2. M.J. Rose tells an interesting story. I started reading her way back when her first book came out. I recently read In Session, which was very interesting. If you haven't read this one I recommend it. Great Review Michelle!!
