Roots - The Read-Along...Won't you join me? #Roots

Coming up on Monday, May 30, the History Channel is airing a new mini-series of Roots. This is the iconic story based on the novel by Alex Haley. I remember the original television mini-series had a profound effect on me when I was a girl and I've always been meaning to read the book. So, in honor of the new mini-series, I thought I would host a read-along before it airs. Are you game?

The read-along will take place in April and May. The reading and discussion schedule is listed below. Please note: I am not a huge stickler for rules so you don't have to join in on every discussion. This is quite a tome so go easy on yourselves. To make things less hectic, I'm going to post discussions every two weeks, and at the end, we will have a final discussion.

Note on which edition I'm reading: Picador 1977 trade paperback edition, 639 pages

Reading/Discussion Schedule

April 1-7: Chapters 1-20, pp. 9 - 82
April 8-14: Chapters 21-37, pp. 82 - 165

I apologize for word verification, but I turned it off and had close to 50 spam comments within 12 hours (nobody has time for that) so I had to turn it back on. Sorry!

This blog is Award Free. I appreciate your thinking of me for an award, but please know that your comments are my award. Thank you!

  1. Like you, I remember what a national event the first Roots miniseries was, but I haven't read the book. Great idea to do it now with the new one! It will be a "watch-along" too.

  4. Thank you for sharing this at The Book Nook at Create With Joy Michelle!
I SO wish I had the time to join you on this reading adventure Michelle - the original series was so powerful - I am looking forward to the new one and very excited about what you are hosting!

I will definitely follow along - regrettably I don't have the time to join you right now - but I am happy to help you promote this very worthwhile endeavor! :-)

(Do hope to join you at the read-a-thon if I can - still have to check my schedule for that - know I have plenty thrillers begging to be read!)

    Have an amazing month!

  5. I bought this book about 6 months ago and have been looking for a reason to read it for a while. Though if I listen to the audiobook I won't be reading at the same pace as you. I'll try to join in.

  6. Looking forward to participating in the discussion. Having written a book about the author of Roots, Alex Haley, I hope to add context to the story itself.
