Once Upon a Read-a-Thon--Wrap-Up

Another read-a-thon! This one is hosted by Candace's Book Blog, Pure Imagination and Reading Angels.

Wrap-Up
I read 87 pages of The White Queen, Philippa Gregory
35 pages of The Queen's Rivals, Brandy Purdy

Not much, but I did read some. =O)

************

Not sure how much reading I'll get done because I have to work, but I at least need to read The Queen's Rivals by Brandy Purdy (by Wed. for a tour) and read the section of The White Queen for the read-a-long.

Happy Read-a-Thon!

Summer Lovin' Read-a-Thon--Plans, Updates, and Wrap-Up

Wrap-Up in body of post

The Summer Lovin’ Readathon is a week-long readathon event hosted by seven independent bloggers! (Oh, Chrys!, Tumbling Books, Effortlessly Reading, Love Life Read, Shelf Addiction, Read Sleep Repeat, and Reviewing Wonderland)
Spend the week reading at your own pace, when and how you want too. There will be daily challenges for awesome prizes and opportunities to get points toward the Grand Prize Packs.
As if that weren’t enough – the week will end with a 24-hr marathon readathon! Twitter parties, mini-challenges, games, prizes given EVERY HOUR, and more chances to get points toward the Grand Prize Packs.
Sign-ups will be open through July 6th. I’m in, are you?!

Wrap-Up
I didn't do as well as I planned. Turns out a long weekend with lots of free "me" time just invites more opportunities to waste time. LOL! It was nice and relaxing at least. I ended up reading 87 pages of The Poisonwood Bible and 84 pages of The White Queen so 171 pages total. Sad, I know. ;O)

Goals
The White Queen by Philippa Gregory (section for read-a-long)
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (I was supposed to finish this in June for the Classics Spin. However, I didn't, but I'm SO enjoying it that I have to keep reading!)
Under the Dome by Stephen King
Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

I have a ton to catch up on with the last two books.

I'm off on the holiday and Friday so I plan to get in a lot of reading on my long weekend!

UPDATES

Day One--Class Orientation
I'm a mom of two middle school age boys. They are the love and backbone of my life. We live in Nashville, Tennessee, but I'm a born and raised Yankee (grew up in Michigan) so living in the South is kind of ironic. LOL! I'm an avid reader and books have pretty much always been a very important part of my life. I have a home library of 3000+ books and every time I look at my books, I just feel warm inside. I'm sure that's not hard to understand, my fellow book lovers. I also love read-a-thons (which is why I host four a year myself). I pretty much participate in any that come down the pike. ;O)  My favorite genre is historical fiction which you can probably tell by my blog. I also love horror, but I have a separate horror blog for that genre. Really though, I pretty much love reading anything (with a few exceptions). I have pretty eclectic taste. I'd have to credit my parents with getting me reading because I learned that they were avid readers from day one. They never denied me books, we took frequent trips to the library, and books, not toys, were our treats when we went to the grocery store.

Thursday

# of Pages Read for week: 67 pages of The Poisonwood Bible, 84 pages of The White Queen (Total = 151 pages)

Day Five--Progress (see above)
Only 151 pages (not including what I'm reading today) so far this week, but hoping to get a lot more reading in tonight and the rest of the weekend. I am a little off track from what I planned, but I'm okay with that. Enjoying my days off of work with no kids (ME time!). I am hoping to finish The Poisonwood Bible this weekend and possibly read some more of Under the Dome and Infinite Jest.

Coming in October: The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert

THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS
By Elizabeth Gilbert
Viking; On-sale October 1, 2013; $28.95; 9780670024858

“There is much pleasure in this unhurried, sympathetic, intelligent novel by an author confident in her material and her form.” —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

“Gilbert's sweeping saga of Henry Whittaker and his daughter Alma offers an allegory for the great, rampant heart of the 19th century…The dense, descriptive writing seems lifted from pages written two centuries past, yet it's laced with spare ironical touches and elegant phrasing…Characters leap into life, visible and vibrant… Multiple narrative threads weave seamlessly into a saga reminiscent of T. C. Boyle's Water Music…A brilliant exercise of intellect and imagination.”—Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

Gilbert triumphantly returns to fiction with a big novel, about a big century, written in the bold, questing spirit of that singular time. Alma Whittaker is born into perfect Philadelphia privilege; an independent girl with a thirst for knowledge, Alma quickly comes into her own within the world of plants and science. Her father, Henry Whittaker, is a willful and charismatic botanical importer and pharmaceutical magnate whose vast fortune belies his lowly beginnings as a vagrant in Kew Gardens. Her mother, Beatrix, a strict woman from an esteemed Dutch family, has a grasp of botany that is equal to any man's. Her saintly stepsister, Prudence, is one of unparalleled beauty and decorum.

As Alma's careful studies of moss take her deeper into the mysteries of evolution, the man she comes to love, a mysterious painter of orchids named Ambrose Pike, draws her into the opposite direction – into the realm of the spiritual, the divine, and the magical. Alma is a clear-minded scientist of dogged perseverance, Ambrose a utopian artist who longs for purity and communion. But what unites this couple is a shared passion for knowing – a desperate need to understand the workings of this world and the mechanisms behind all of life. She is a witness to history, as well as a maker of history herself. She stands on the cusp of the modern, with one foot still in the Enlightenment Age.

Brilliantly researched and lovingly crafted, THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS carries the reader breathlessly across the globe. It is a work of extraordinary faith and of deep scientific reflection. Perhaps above all, it is the story of an irrepressible woman, determined to satisfy her most powerful urges toward both love and knowledge. A novel immersed in all the great questions of the nineteenth century, THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS is also very much a novel for our times.

Library Books Read-a-Thon: Reading Plans, Updates and Wrap-Up

Wrap-Up is below

The Library Books Read-a-Thon starts today, hosted by Rachael Turns Pages. I'm planning on working on at least one library book, Infinite Jest...since I'm SO behind on the read-a-long. Rachael had stated that reading our own books is okay too so I will also be trying to finish Watership Down. I have to read Seduction by M.J. Rose for the book tour on Monday. Also, need to read more of Under the Dome for the read-a-long and I have to finish The Poisonwood Bible by the end of the month. I have a short non-fiction to read for a tour on Friday, Abundance Triggers and another library book I'll try to read is World War Z, if I have time.

Whew! Happy Reading All!

Wrap-Up

Once again, work was too hectic this week so by the time I got done working, I didn't feel like blogging and so I did not update once. I did manage to get some reading done, although I don't know how (see below)! Sadly, I did not get to pick up my library book this week. =O(

Total # of Books Read:  2.5
# of Pages Read for week: 723
Books read:
Watership Down--200 pages to end
Seduction by M.J. Rose
Abundance Triggers by Kanta Bosniak
