Armchair BEA: Networking in Real Life

I wasn't going to post today because, honestly, I haven't done much networking outside of online.  But then I read today's guest post over at the Armchair BEA blog and I saw a little thing on their top five suggestions for real life networking...charity book sales! In other words, library sales! Yes, I'm a big patron of library sales.  We have a monthly Friends of the Library sale at my local branch, the Second Saturday Book Sale.  I attend every month.  And I have even done some networking by discussing my blog and the book blogging community while I'm there.  I've also become friends with one of their regular volunteers on Goodreads.  I do utilize the site they mentioned, booksalefinder.com so I frequent other library and charity sales throughout the year as well.  I donate books to the library for their sales too.

So, I'm not a huge real life networker, but I have my little niche.  I hope to expand my horizons and I'm hoping my trip to the Southern Festival of Books this Fall will be more of a success than last (long story...I could only stay for about 30 minutes).

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. It means so much.

I apologize for word verification, but as soon as I changed the settings from only users with Google accounts, I started receiving a ton of spam comments...within one hour of changing the settings. The bots are on high alert apparently.

  1. ooooooooooooo awesome! I want a full report! Any authors you are specifically looking forward to?

  2. Library sales are fun! My favorite is the huge annual Houston Friends of the Library sale at the George R. Brown convention center. The last day is all the books you can fit in a sack for $10.

  3. I am a little miffed at my local library momentarily. They are charging me $11 for a book I returned. I am not happy about it and have been disputing it for some time. It's gotten to the point where I may just pay it, even though I don't owe it, just to get back into enjoying the branch and what it has to offer. I'm still very red though so it may take some time still.

  4. I think "networking" is a broad term, and everybody has to define it in their own way. I've been reading alot today, and I've seen so many "I'm really bad about networking" posts (including my own). And yet, we're all here and chatting, so that's networking! And I love my library. My kids and I are there at least once a week. They feed my habit ;)

  5. I agree with what Maria said in the comments about networking being a broad term. I guess that's what's so awesome about it, is that there are so many different ways you can network, whether they be big broad gestures or just small ones like being engaged enough to go to library sales and keep up that way.

    Here's my post.

  6. The idea of networking can be intimidating. It can be hard for me to chat with strangers. But it's so easy when you're in a room with other book lovers. I just turn to the person next to me and say, "so, what do you like to read?" Instant conversation. I did this any time I felt nervous at RT, and I met a lot of really awesome people. I'm actually glad I went by myself, because I probably would have stuck with my friend(s) and not had anywhere near as much fun.

Also, as someone who was networked "at", I think it's really important to approach these conversations with a genuine desire to learn something about the other person. I had a few people who seemed way more interested in what my website could do for them than who I am or what I might have to say. We are interested in people who are interested in us. Leave the agenda at home and be interested.

  7. Library sales as a networking tool? I will have to find the guest post, as I've not seen it yet. I wonder if it works quite the same, when the library always has a book sale going on?
