Mailbox Monday

MM is a weekly event hosted by Marcia at The Printed Page.

I got some great books at the Goodwill store on Saturday.  It was their monthly half price sale so the following books cost me a total of $6.00...how awesome is that?! I did not receive any books in the mail and I did win a couple of books, but I will include them in my MM when I receive them in the mail.

Scarlet--Stephen R. Lawhead (hardcover)

The second installment of a completely re-imagined epic of the man known as Robin Hood--told in a far more eerie, earthy, and elemental way than ever before.

As the story of King Raven continues, the stakes grow ever higher and the lives of Bran's band hang ever more in the balance. Will Scarlet is about to be hung and Bran discovers a secret that leads them to a desperate sea voyage to France through a vicious storm in a daring attempt to reveal the plot against King William by his brother, Duke Robert, and the greedy Baron de Braose.

Will Bran's loyalty re-gain him the throne of Elfael? Or will his efforts only increase the sheriff's determination to destory King Raven? (from Fantastic Fiction)

Carrie--Stephen King (This is the collector's edition with an intro by Tabitha King, King's wife)

A modern classic, Carrie introduced a distinctive new voice in American fiction -- Stephen King. The story of misunderstood high school girl Carrie White, her extraordinary telekinetic powers, and her violent rampage of revenge, remains one of the most barrier-breaking and shocking novels of all time.

Make a date with terror and live the nightmare that is...Carrie. (from Fantastic Fiction)

I am Madame X--Gioia Diliberto

Mystery is often more alluring than knowledge. A fictional memoir of the legendary American-born beauty Virginie Gautreau, the subject of John Singer Sargent's famous 1884 painting, Portrait of Madame X, Gioia Diliberto's I Am Madame X risks dashing cold water on one of the loveliest and most persistent mysteries in Western art history: what the model is thinking. Following in the footsteps of Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring, though with much more historical documentation at her disposal, Diliberto gives voice to a woman whose memory rests on this single painting. A gem of Belle Époque Paris, Virginie Gautreau had fled Louisiana with her mother during the Civil War. Married at a young age to a French banker, she attracted every kind of attention with her unusual beauty and her daring fashion sense. Her affairs were widely whispered about. Diliberto presents a vivid picture of Virginie's life and times, and brings to life one model's troubled but stimulating relationship with the artist who immortalized her. (from Amazon)

On Strike for Christmas--Sheila Roberts

At Christmastime, it seems as though a woman's job is never done--slaving over the Christmas feast, mailing the cards, schlepping to the mail, the endless wrapping...bah humbug! So this year, Joy and Laura and the rest of their knitting group decide to go on strike. If their husbands and families want a nice Christmas--filled with parties, decorations and presents--well, they'll just have to organize it themselves. The boycott soon takes on a life of its own when a reporter picks up the story, and more women join in. But as Christmas Day approaches, each couple confronts larger issues in their marriage and discovers that a little holiday magic is exactly what they need to come together. (from Fantastic Fiction)

  4. Have you read the first book in the series of Robin Hood? I have seen these books and have been curious about them. When I was first starting to really get into reading I read In the Hall of the Dragon King and was not that impressed with it. But I should probably go back and read it again and see how I feel about it. That is why I am curious about the Robin Hood series. Looking forward to your review.
